Former Hearts of Oak striker Prince Tagoe has hailed the club’s historic victory in the 2004 CAF Confederation Cup as a monumental achievement, especially given the intense rivalry with Asante Kotoko.
Tagoe was a key figure in Hearts of Oak’s successful campaign, finishing as the Ghana Premier League’s top scorer with 18 goals and playing a crucial role in the team’s African triumph. The Phobians secured the CAF Confederation Cup title on January 9, 2004, after defeating Asante Kotoko in a dramatic final held in Kumasi.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but Hearts of Oak emerged victorious after a nail-biting penalty shootout, winning 9-8 to claim the prestigious title.
“Hearts and Kotoko have always been rivals, and making sure we brought the cup back from Kumasi was a massive achievement,” Tagoe told GhanaWeb.
He further reflected on the significance of the victory, saying, “It was the first time, and I believe it will remain in the history books for a long time. Those are some of the most joyful moments I’ve had with Hearts.”
Tagoe’s outstanding performances in the 2004 season earned him a move to Europe, where he enjoyed stints with clubs in Germany, Serbia, and Turkey, cementing his place as one of Ghana’s notable exports in football.
