Memphis Depay and Jeremie Frimpong performed the traditional Ghanaian dance ‘Adowa’ after Depay scored in the Netherlands’ warm-up game against Canada.
Both players, who have Ghanaian heritage, are set to represent the Dutch national team in the upcoming European Championship in Germany. In their penultimate preparatory match, the Oranje displayed their dominance over Canada.
Following a goalless first half, Ronald Koeman’s team broke the deadlock ten minutes after the break. Frimpong delivered a perfect cross, which Depay converted into a routine goal. However, it was their post-goal celebration that captured attention online, as the duo embraced their Ghanaian roots through the ‘Adowa’ dance.
Depay showcased his cultural heritage with synchronized hand and foot movements, soon joined by Frimpong. Seven minutes later, Frimpong scored a stunning goal, further extending the lead. Former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst added a third from a rebound, and Virgil van Dijk sealed the 4-0 victory with a fourth goal.
Meanwhile, the adowa is a dance by the Akan people of Ghana. It is a popular traditional dance in Ghana and it is performed at cultural ceremonies like festivals, funerals, engagements, and celebrations.
