Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has called on Ghanaians to rally behind Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz as the national team intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The all-time leading scorer for the Black Stars believes unity, patience and strong defensive organisation will be crucial if Ghana is to make a positive impact at the global tournament.
Gyan acknowledged the challenge facing Queiroz, noting that the Portuguese tactician has limited time to build and prepare his squad before the World Cup kicks off. Despite the short preparation period, he insisted the coach deserves the full backing of supporters across the country.
“We have a coach whose time is limited. We have to give him the hope and support to qualify,” Gyan said.
The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker also highlighted Ghana’s defensive shortcomings, warning that the team must address its vulnerabilities at the back if it hopes to compete against the world’s best teams.
While praising the attacking quality within the squad, Gyan stressed that defensive solidity should be the foundation of Ghana’s approach.
“We should be more defensively sound before we think about other things. If we don’t fix our defence, opponents can penetrate easily because it looks like now we are conceding in every game,” he told 3Sports.
The 39-year-old pointed to Morocco national football team’s historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and Ghana’s own impressive performance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup as examples of how disciplined defending can propel teams deep into major tournaments.
According to Gyan, becoming more organised defensively would significantly improve Ghana’s chances of competing with elite nations at the World Cup.
“If we are able to be more defensively sound, like what the Moroccans did in Qatar and what we did in 2010, I think it is something that will help. I’m not the coach, but that’s my advice.”
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, Gyan’s message serves as a rallying call for unity and support as Ghana seeks to make a strong impression on football’s biggest stage.
