Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has defended the decision to appoint Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars head coach, stressing that Ghana needed an experienced and World Cup-ready manager with the tournament fast approaching.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Adams explained that the limited time before the 2026 FIFA World Cup—less than two months—made it essential to secure a coach capable of making an immediate impact.
To balance urgency with caution, the Ministry and the Ghana Football Association agreed on a flexible, short-term arrangement rather than a long-term commitment.
“We needed a coach who is ready to take the team because the World Cup is just around the corner. Whether local or foreign, the coach must be ready,” Adams stated.
He confirmed that Queiroz has been handed a contract of up to four months, covering the duration of the tournament, with any extension dependent on performance.
The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician replaces Otto Addo and faces an immediate test, leading Ghana in a tough Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team.
