Nathaniel Adjei, the emerging talent recently called up to the Black Stars, reflects on his journey to the senior national team, acknowledging the pivotal role played by his participation in the U20 Africa Cup of Nations with the Black Satellites.
Adjei, who was a mere 16 years old at the time, was a key member of Karim Zito’s squad that competed in the U20 AFCON held in Mauritania. Despite his youth, Adjei made significant contributions, featuring in all three group stage matches before an unfortunate injury sidelined him for the knockout stage.
The Black Satellites’ triumph in the tournament, culminating in a 2-0 victory over Uganda in the final, proved to be a turning point in Adjei’s career trajectory.
In an interview with 3 Sports regarding his maiden call-up to the Black Stars, the Lorient defender emphasized the significance of winning the U20 AFCON. Adjei expressed gratitude for the opportunities the victory provided, noting that it opened doors for him, ultimately leading to his move to France.
Reflecting on his journey, Adjei remarked, “Winning the AFCON was the biggest step for me in my career. It’s not easy to go into a tournament and win the ultimate. That year we had the opportunity to win, and it opened a lot of doors for me. I had a couple of offers outside and then in the end, I ended up in France. That tournament improved my career.”
However, despite his call-up, reports suggest that Adjei may not be available for the upcoming friendlies, casting uncertainty over his participation with the Black Stars.
