The Black Stars of Ghana have relocated their training base to DC United’s facilities in Washington, D.C., just days after arriving in the United States for the FIFA World Cup.
Ghana had initially been assigned Bryant University in Boston as their official training base. However, concerns raised by head coach Carlos Queiroz over the suitability of the facility prompted a change of plans.
The Black Stars departed Boston on Tuesday, with players and officials already settled into their new base in Washington.
Queiroz reportedly expressed reservations about the Bryant University facility, noting that it was accessible to students and members of the public. The Portuguese tactician believed the lack of privacy could negatively affect the team’s preparations for the tournament.
Following an assessment of alternative options, Ghana decided to move their training operations to DC United’s training complex, where the team will have a more controlled and secure environment.
Speaking to Asempa FM, Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed the relocation and disclosed that the new arrangement would come at an additional financial cost.
The Black Stars are expected to maintain an intensive training programme ahead of their Group L opener against Panama on June 17. Ghana’s final pre-World Cup friendly was also cancelled, leaving the team without a final test match before the tournament.
Ghana had initially scheduled an international friendly against Honduras to assess their readiness, but the match was called off after the Central American nation withdrew from the arrangement.
The four-time African champions will be making their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance and have been drawn into a challenging Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.
Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before taking on England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their final group-stage match will be against Croatia on June 27.
