Newly appointed Ghana Black Stars head coach, Carlos Queiroz, has expressed deep pride and emotion over his new role, describing it as one of the most significant appointments of his long managerial journey. He believes that leading Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will remain a lifelong memory.
The experienced Portuguese manager, 73, has signed a short-term four-month deal with the Ghana Football Association to guide the four-time African champions through the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Queiroz replaces Otto Addo, who left the post following Ghana’s disappointing international break in March, where the Black Stars suffered back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany.
After meeting Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, ahead of his official unveiling, the former Real Madrid and Portugal coach shared how honoured he feels to take charge of the national team.
He noted that his connection to Africa makes the role even more special. Having been born and raised in Mozambique, Queiroz said leading an African nation like Ghana to the world stage is something he will treasure forever.
He is expected to be formally introduced to the Ghanaian football community at the Alisa Hotel, where he will also present his immediate plans for the team at 1:00 pm.
As part of preparations for the tournament, Ghana will engage in friendly matches against Mexico and Wales to sharpen the squad ahead of the competition.
The Black Stars are making their fifth appearance at the World Cup and have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. Their campaign kicks off on June 17 against Panama, followed by a clash with England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
Having exited at the group stage in both the 2014 and 2022 editions, Queiroz now carries the responsibility of pushing Ghana further in the global tournament and restoring confidence in the team’s international performance.
