Ashanti Gold SC head coach Charles Kwabena Akonnor insists the ultimate target of the Obuasi based club is not beat relegation despite their impressive performance in the second round of the Ghana Premier league.
The miners have gone four matches without a loss, picking two important away wins against Medeama SC and Accra Hearts of Oak.
The former Ghana captain who has received praises from football enthusiasts for his outstanding technical knowledge has retaliated he’s focused on helping his side survive relegation.
‘’Escaping relegation has been the target since I got there [ASHGOLD] he said at a post-match presser.
He continued ‘’I lost 4-1 to Dwarfs when I started but I didn’t give up. I told the boys not to give up and when the chance arrived to strengthen the team we brought in some new players and it has transformed the team. ‘’
‘’The boys are working very hard every week, I push them to the limit and they give their all. I am very happy because it very difficult to have players like that because they come with different attitude and we can only be proud of that.’’
Quizzed what did the magic for the miners to halt the Hearts unbeaten home run in the ongoing Ghana Premier League the former VfL Wolfsburg player said.
‘’We had chances but unfortunately failed to utilize them, however we had a goal in hand and so we were still comfortable. Should Hearts have scored, probably it would have changed the game. ‘’
‘’Our main focus was to try as much as we can in the first 20 minutes because if you look at their previous games they always score in the first twenty minutes.’’
‘’ Razak is very instrumental in going forward, Cobbinah wasn’t around and we were worried about Malik. So we made sure they didn’t function, dominated the midfield in the first half, possessed the ball very well and we frustrated them. Since it was an away match, there was the need to be strategically wise. We did that and we won convincingly.’’
Ashgold next host league leaders WAFA at the Obuasi Len Clay sports stadium on July 9 in match day 21 of the Ghana Premier League.
