Newly named South Africa national team captain Ronwen Williams has said that he and his teammates want to qualify for the finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to compensate for their failure to make it to the Africa Cup of Nations finals to be staged in Cameroon next year.
“We are still disappointed that we are not part of the AFCON however our focus now is the FIFA Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers because we want to be at the World Cup” – Ronwen Williams said on Monday.
South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe are in Group G of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification group.
The South Africans start their group campaign at Zimbabwe on September 3rd whilst Ghana play at home against Ethiopia on the same day for Day 1 of the qualifiers.
There are four teams in each of the ten qualifying groups of the CAF World Cup qualification series and only the group winners of the advance to the final round.
