Crystal Palace hitman, Jordan Ayew captained Black Stars to their first defeat in the 2021 AFCON Qualifiers in Omdurman on Tuesday afternoon against Sudan.
The younger brother of Ghana’s substantive captain, Andre Ayew led his country to their first defeat in AFCON Qualifiers to Sudan after both first and second deputy captains together with the Swansea City man Missed the game due to injuries and suspension respectively.
Ayew’s reign as captain did not go how he would’ve expected as the stars succumbed to a narrow 1-0 loss to the North African country.
The match was played with low intensity from the blast of the whistle but Ghana’s few chances came in the opening quarter of the match-all falling in the path of striker Caleb Ekuban who failed to utilise his chances.
The opening half failed to produce a goal and after the second half, the Tempo to the match did not get any better as both teams continue to build up play slowly.
Just when Jordan Ayew and his boys thought they had secured a point to book their place in the continental showpiece, Mohammed Abdul Rahman had other ideas as he headed home a cross from close range to power their Sudanese to a famous victory over Ghana.
The game ended 1-0 to hosts as Ghana suffered its first defeat in the AFCON Qualifiers.
The Crystal Palace star would be cursing his stars as he failed to clinch a victory on a day he was handed the armband.
Ghana will play South Africa and Sao Tome and Príncipe next year in the last two qualifying games to have a chance to seal their qualification for the tournament which will be hosted in Cameroon in 2022 instead of 2021 due to the outbreak of coronavirus disease.
