Southampton winger Kamaldeen Sulemana stirred an engaging conversation during an interview with Showmax when asked to name the best Ghanaian footballer to have played in the English Premier League.
At first, Sulemana pointed to Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew as his top choice. However, after a follow-up prompted some reflection, he playfully changed his mind and paid tribute to Chelsea icon Michael Essien.
“Actually I change my mind (giggles). I have to give it to Essien for all he had achieved with Chelsea in the Premier League. If we are looking at strikers, then definitely Jordan, but generally it has to be Essien. He was one of the best coaches I had, as well. We worked together in Denmark. He is such a nice guy,” Sulemana shared.
His final choice, Michael Essien, highlights his deep respect for the former Chelsea midfielder’s legacy. Essien, widely regarded for his strength, leadership, and versatility, enjoyed a highly successful stint at Stamford Bridge, winning multiple major trophies.
Despite shifting his pick, the 23-year-old winger didn’t dismiss Ayew’s contributions, giving the Crystal Palace man his due—especially among Ghanaian strikers in the league.
