Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has identified the early injury to Marvin Senaya as a major turning point in Ghana’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the setback disrupted the Black Stars’ tactical plans.
Senaya, who emerged as one of Ghana’s most consistent performers during the tournament, was forced off in the opening minutes of the Round of 32 clash against Colombia after suffering a hamstring injury.
The AJ Auxerre defender had started all of Ghana’s previous matches and played a crucial role in the team’s defensive stability, including clean-sheet performances against Panama and England.
However, his early departure forced head coach Carlos Queiroz into a tactical reshuffle, with Alidu Seidu introduced as his replacement.
Colombia Exploit Ghana’s Right Side
According to Kofi Adams, Senaya’s absence created a defensive imbalance that Colombia eventually exploited, with the decisive goal coming from the area Ghana had struggled to protect.
The Minister believes the injury was a significant setback for the Black Stars, who eventually suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the South Americans in Kansas City.
“I expected us to go further than we did. But our loss against Colombia was unfortunate. Before the game, I had high hopes that we were going to achieve something great,” Adams told JoyNews.
“Unfortunately, we suffered a setback very early. Our key defender, Senaya, who was a discovery of the tournament, got injured. That created a weakness on that side, and you could see that was where the goal came from.”
Adams Defends Ghana’s Cautious Approach
The Buem MP also defended Ghana’s approach after falling behind, explaining that the team had to remain disciplined rather than commit too many players forward and risk conceding more goals.
He argued that chasing the game recklessly could have exposed the Black Stars to further damage against a dangerous Colombian side.
“You don’t just do that and create a leaky defence that could result in an even heavier defeat,” he added.
Ghana Reflect on World Cup Campaign
Ghana’s World Cup journey ended at the Round of 32 stage after finishing third in Group L behind England and Croatia.
Despite the early elimination, the Black Stars achieved a significant milestone by reaching the knockout phase for the first time since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The team will now shift focus to preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as Ghana begins the process of rebuilding for future international competitions.
