Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has underscored the importance of a strategic approach in appointing the next Black Stars coach, advocating for a minimum three-year contract to facilitate team development.
Following the departure of Chris Hughton post the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to the team’s disappointing performance, the senior national team finds itself without a permanent head coach.
Hughton’s tenure witnessed a lackluster start in the tournament, marked by a loss against Cape Verde and draws against Egypt and Mozambique.
To address the coaching vacancy, a five-member committee was established to recommend a suitable candidate to the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). While the committee has completed its report, the official announcement is pending.
In a recent interview, Minister Ussif stressed the need for stability in coaching appointments to foster team growth. He emphasized that short-term contracts impede the team’s progress and advocated for long-term commitments.
“I have proposed that the next Black Stars coach must be awarded a three-year deal or more,” Minister Ussif stated during an interview with Asempa FM, highlighting the necessity for a shift in approach to propel the team forward.
Meanwhile, numerous reports in the media indicate that Otto Addo is emerging as the frontrunner for reappointment as Black Stars coach.
