Ignatius Osei-Fosu, assistant coach of Sudan’s national team, has expressed his willingness and readiness to take up the role of head coach for Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars.
Osei-Fosu, alongside former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah, recently guided Sudan to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Sudan finished second in Group F behind Angola, with Ghana failing to qualify after placing third with just three points from six matches.
In an interview with 3Sports, Osei-Fosu, who has previously coached Eleven Wonders and Medeama SC, stated that his experience and mentorship under Kwesi Appiah have prepared him for the Black Stars coaching role.
“I think I need to learn more from Kwesi Appiah. But if he says, ‘Ignatius, you’ve been with me for one year now, and the Black Stars are calling you, I think you’re ready,’ I will take the job because tactically, I am capable of handling the Black Stars,” Osei-Fosu confidently remarked.
Despite his interest, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) appears set to retain Otto Addo as the head coach of the Black Stars, despite the team’s underwhelming performance in the AFCON qualifiers. Addo is expected to lead the team into the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, which resumes in March 2024.
Osei-Fosu’s comments come amid growing calls for leadership changes in the national team, with many Ghanaians seeking a fresh approach to revive the fortunes of the Black Stars.
