Columbus Crew SC defender Harrison Afful has returned to the Black Stars selection to face Sudan in the third and fourth round of games of the 2021 AFCON Qualification but after a lengthy absence why is the 34-year old defender making a return to the Ghana national team?
According to Ghana coach C.K Akonnor the experienced defender is making a return to the team for his track record and also serve as mentor to Anang Benson – the player who is being prepared by Akonnor to hold the right back position of the Black Stars.
“For me, I am looking for immediate solutions and if you want to do that you don’t want to play around, you want to go straight to the point and therefore the immediate solutions are those guys.” Akonnor explained on Friday shortly after naming the squad.
“Again, on the right side, just recently, this young gentleman, Benson, who did very, very well. But he needs support, he needs the old guys to be around, to learn from them and therefore I thought it wise to bring around none other person than Harrison Afful, to back him up and of course support him and that is why Harrison is also there.” he added.
