2017 Tour de Ivory Coast: Boakye makes history with Yellow Jersey

Ghana’s cyclist Anthony Boakye made history by winning the country’s first yellow jersey in an international event at the just ended Cycling Championship dubbed “La route de l’est” in Cote D’Ivoire over the weekend.

The 22-year-old clocked a time of 18hrs 49mins 38 secs in the 766.8km race which was competed in 11 stages.

Boakye who is also a member of the River Stars Cycling team snatched the Ultimate Jersey from Ivorian Daniel Kabre who was initially in hold of the Jersey since the beginning of the tour at the semifinal stage of the championship with a time difference of 1mins 22secs.

He proceeded to maintain the Jersey at the finals stage with the same time difference.

Since its inception in 1986, Cote D’Ivoire have been regular winners of this competition and this victory makes Ghana the second country after Cameron to win the 7-day tour.

The river stars Cyclist was once again crowned the champion of the best young Cyclist of the tour with a time of 18hrs 49mins 38sec with Ivorian Kabre Daniel coming second with a time of 18hrs 51mins while Ghana’s Kusi Clement occupied the 3rd position after clocking a time of 18hrs 52mins 57secs.

Meanwhile Ghana’s team consisting of Abdul Mumin Razak (Captain), Frank Awuku, Kusi Clement, Anthony Boakye, Rahman Abdul and Umar Abdul Razak made away with the best team trophy with a time of 54hrs 40mins 17secs
