Profile of Abdul-Karim Zito: From ‘Soccer Policeman’ to Kotoko Interim Head Coach

Full Name: Abdul-Karim Zito Kabutey
Nickname: Soccer Policeman
Date of Birth: 5th October 1960
Age: 64
Place of Birth: Nsawam, Eastern Region, Ghana
Current Role: Interim Head Coach, Asante Kotoko SC
Religion: Islam
Marital Status: Married with 7 children (5 boys, 2 girls)

Abdul-Karim Zito Kabutey, famously known as the ‘Soccer Policeman’, is a former Ghana international and one of the most experienced figures in Ghanaian football, both as a player and a coach.

Born in Nsawam, Zito had his early education at St. Martin’s Secondary School before beginning his football career. He started as a full-back with GIHOC Stars in the 1970s and gained national attention when he joined Asante Kotoko in 1978. During a CAF Cup match against Semassi of Togo, commentator Kwabena Yeboah nicknamed him “Soccer Policeman” for his commanding defensive performance that kept Semassi’s star attacker Abdul Razak quiet.

Zito spent eight years at Kotoko (1978–1986), becoming a key figure in their domestic and continental campaigns before moving to Kumapim Stars. His solid performances earned him a call-up to the Ghana national team, where he represented the Black Stars from 1980 to 1984.

Coaching Career & Achievements

Zito holds CAF coaching licenses C, B, and A. His coaching journey is marked by a history of success in Ghanaian football development:

  • Kwaebibirem Stars: Guided the team to the Ghana Premier League in 2000.
  • Feyenoord Academy (now WAFA): Promoted the club to the Premier League in 2004.
  • Medeama SC: Qualified them for Division One.
  • Dreams FC: Took over from C.K. Akonnor and led them back to the Premier League in 2018, also winning the G8 tournament.
  • Ghana U17 and U20: Served as Head Coach of both national youth teams, leading the U20 side to win the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

He has also coached prominent Ghanaian clubs including Hearts of Oak, King Faisal, B/A Stars, and had earlier stints with Kotoko.

Honours as a Player

  • Ghana Premier League: 5-time winner
  • FA Cup: 2-time winner
  • CAF Champions League: Winner (1983), Finalist (1982)

Current Role

Following the departure of Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, Zito has been appointed Interim Head Coach and Technical Director of Asante Kotoko. His immediate task is to turn around the club’s form in the final stretch of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, with a stated mission of achieving “Operation 18 Points” from their remaining matches.

With his vast experience and deep knowledge of Ghanaian football, Zito’s return to the Kotoko dugout could prove pivotal as the Porcupine Warriors seek a strong finish to the season.
