The former Fulham FC midfielder, has expressed his disappointment with how the Ghana Football Association (GFA) treated former Black Stars coach, Charles Kwablah Akonnor.
Derek Boateng believes that Akonnor was not given the self-sufficiency to manage the national team, and was instead held accountable for decisions that were beyond his control.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Boateng said, “I feel they didn’t help CK Akonnor at all. They controlled things for him but kicked him out when it went bad, and that’s really, really bad.”
Boateng, who is current a scout for Right to Dream Academy, played for the Black Stars between 2001 and 2014 and has been vocal in his support of Akonnor. He revealed that he had heard the former coach complaining to someone he was close to, describing the situation as “not the best.”
Akonnor was appointed head coach of the Black Stars in 2019 following the departure of James Kwasi Appiah.
However, his job was shorten, as he got sacked after Ghana lost 1-0 to South Africa in a 2022 World Cup Qualifier in September 2021.
