Former Ghana international Derek Boateng says the Ghana Football Association must take things into their hands and visit Felix Afena-Gyan in Italy if they are going to need the services of the player.
Afena-Gyan turned down a late invitation to the Black Meteors team after being ignored for the Black Stars’ squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola.
The GFA were said to have extended an invitation to the Cremonse forward but the player in return rejected an opportunity to play for Ibrahim Tanko’s side through his management.
However, Boateng, who also played for the junior ranks of the national team before joining the senior team, has suggested the GFA go to see the youngster ahead of the U23 AFCON to be staged in Morocco in June.
“If the FA thinks about him and his mental issues, they have to take a plane there and talk to him so that he feels important,” he said.
“This under-23 AFCON that they want to go, they will need him if they want to win. They have to call him not on phone but by going to see him in person. He needs to feel that we care about him because these are the things we do that make us lose players.”
Afena-Gyan was also snubbed for the final squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
