Berekum Chelsea and Ashantigold take on each other in the MTN FA Cup semi-finals of this season following their respective victories in the quarterfinal stage but none of them could play in Africa next season should they go on to win the Cup competition.
By default, the winner of the FA Cup gets a ticket to represent Ghana in the CAF Confederation Cup but Ashantigold and Berekum Chelsea did not apply for licence for the 2021/22 CAF Inter Club competitions.
“The Club Licensing Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has approved the Licence application of three Premier League Clubs to participate in the upcoming 2021/22 CAF INTER Club competitions. League Champions Accra Hearts of Oak, MTN FA Cup holders Asante Kotoko SC and Medeama SC have all been granted licenses with conditions.” a GFA statement said.
“The Club Licensing Department opened a general application last month for clubs willing to participate in next seasons CAF Inter Club competitions to apply for licence in line with the new CAF directives and timetable. In total, six clubs including Legon Cities, Aduana FC and Great Olympics applied for licenses. Accra Hearts of Oak SC, Asante Kotoko SC and Medeama SC have received their official Award Letter with the necessary recommendations.” the statement added last week.
This means, technically speaking, Medeama – who will play the semis of the FA Cup against Hearts of Oak – will have the opportunity to play in the Confederation Cup whether they win the FA Cup or not as Hearts of Oak have already been confirmed for the CAF Champions League by virtue of winning the league.
