While much of the post-match discussion has centred on Caleb Yirenkyi’s goal and Lawrence Ati Zigi’s heroics, Jerome Opoku quietly produced one of the most influential performances on the pitch. His display was recognised by Sofascore, which rated him as Ghana’s highest-performing player on the night, underlining just how effective he was defensively.
Beyond his individual contributions, Opoku’s presence appeared to have a calming effect on those around him, particularly Jonas Adjetey. The Wolfsburg defender looked far more assured than in previous outings, and Opoku’s organisation, positioning and ability to read danger undoubtedly played a role in that improvement.
One of the biggest concerns heading into the World Cup has been who partners Alexander Djiku in central defence. However, with Djiku unavailable, Opoku has made a compelling case to claim the left centre-back position. His aerial dominance, physicality, anticipation and composure against Wales suggest he is currently the strongest candidate for the role.
The only criticism that remains is one that has followed him throughout his international career. At club level, Opoku is known for being vocal, authoritative and constantly communicating with teammates. Yet when he puts on the Black Stars shirt, that leadership quality tends to be less visible. He often appears more reserved than the commanding figure seen week in and week out for his club.
With Djiku absent, Ghana needs more than just Opoku’s defending. The team needs his voice. It needs his leadership. It needs him directing the backline, organising teammates and taking ownership of the defensive structure.
If he can combine his outstanding defensive qualities with the same vocal presence he shows at club level, Jerome Opoku could become one of Ghana’s most important players at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
At the moment, unless another defender significantly raises his level, the left centre-back position should be Opoku’s to lose. He has earned that status through performance, and Cardiff was further evidence that he is ready for the responsibility.
