Ghana’s captain, Andre Ayew, has taken to Instagram to extend his heartfelt apology for the disappointing performance of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The apology comes eight days after the draw against Mozambique, which led to Ghana’s elimination from the tournament.
In the video posted on his Instagram account, Ayew expressed the difficulty of the past days for every Ghanaian and football fan. He acknowledged the collective disappointment and apologized for the team’s inability to achieve better results.
“This past days have been very difficult for every Ghanaian and every Ghanaian football fan, and myself,” he said.
“I would like to apologise for the results of the AFCON that we just exited. We should have done better. We should have gotten better results too.”
Ghana’s elimination occurred after finishing third in a challenging group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The Black Stars’ journey ended with a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde and consecutive 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique.
This marks the second consecutive tournament where Ghana exited at the group stages without securing a win, extending the nation’s wait for its fifth AFCON title to 42 years. Ayew’s apology reflects the team’s acknowledgment of falling short of expectations and the disappointment felt by fans across the country.
