Asante Kotoko defeated Berekum Chelsea by 2-0 at the Len Clay stadium on Sunday with goals from striker Andy Kumi Francis and substitute Godfred Asiamah as Bright Amponsah missed a penalty for the visitors.
Kumi Francis scored his second Kotoko goal in the 27th minute following a cross from the left by in-form Augustine Okrah. The former Unistar Soccer academy attacker was in the right place at the right time as he had very little contact of the ball following a clearance by defender Stephen Anokye Badu.
Asiamah came off the bench to score a brilliant second for the home team after superbly combining with playmaker Fabio Gama in the 90th minute. The former took a one-two with the Brazilian before rounding off goalkeeper Sammy Adjei to put the game completely beyond the opponents.
Stephen Amankona should have scored the equalizer for Chelsea in the 39th minute after Kotoko goalkeeper Razak Abalora committed a huge blunder but Amankona shot just wide.
At the start of the second half – in the 46th minute specifically- Kotoko full back Samuel Frimpong fouled Amankona in the area and a penalty was given but Bright Amponsah shot over the bar facing Abalora. Amankona who was fouled stepped forward to take the spot kick after receiving treatment on the pitch but the referee instructed him to leave the play – a decision that infuriated the Chelsea player.
Kotoko now lead the league standings with 34 points – one more point over Great Olympics who lost at Legon Cities.
