The 2000 FIFA Club World Championship was the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup, the world club championship for men’s club association football teams.
It took place in Brazil from 5 January to 14 January 2000 and as Accra Hearts of Oak won the 2000 CAF Champions League they were due to represent the country and Africa in the next edition of 2001 but that never happened because bad luck struck.
The Phobians were drawn in Group C and their first game was to be against Julio Iwata of Japan on 3rd August 2001 and then after that they play against Real Madrid of Roberto Carlos, Raul and Iker Casillas on 6th August 2001.
Till date the FIFA Club World Cup is the only FIFA Men’s event that Ghana has never represented at. We have been at the FIFA World Cup three times in 2006, 2010 and 2014. We have not only represented at the FIFA U17 Men’s World Cup but we are two time winners in 1991 and 1995.
Ghana won the 2009 FIFA U20 Men’s World Cup in Egypt. But we have never had a club at the FIFA Club World Cup which is FIFA’s grandest club competition. Hearts of Oak were in line to achieve that historic feat but that would not happen.
The 2001 FIFA Club World Championship was a football tournament arranged by FIFA to take place in Spain from 28 July to 12 August 2001. It was supposed to be the second edition of the FIFA Club World Championship, after the first edition in 2000, but was cancelled owing to a combination of factors such as the collapse of FIFA’s marketing partner ISL and this is the only edition that was not played.
Al-Ahly represente Africa at the 2020 competition which is taking place in Qatar. The African champions won 1-0 over Qatari side Al -Duhail but were beaten 2-0 by European giants Bayern Munich in the semifinals.
